When there is a chance you could be pregnant, it is tempting to over-analyze every sensation as a symptom. Every woman’s body responds to pregnancy differently, but some common symptoms are associated with early pregnancy. Most pregnancy symptoms are caused by hormones shifting within a woman’s body.

Symptoms

Missed period- usually, a missed period is the first symptom of pregnancy a woman experiences when pregnant is a missed period. Other explanations for a missed period can include stress or weight changes.
Nausea- this symptom can occur with or without vomiting at any time of the day, despite being called “morning sickness”. Some women also have accompanying food aversions. Illnesses like the flu or a virus can also explain nausea and vomiting.
Tender breasts- hormone shifts in early pregnancy cause breast changes that leave the breasts swollen and sensitive. Tender breasts can also signify that a woman’s period will arrive soon.
Bloating- the influx of hormones slows digestion which can lead to bloating, a feeling of fullness in the abdomen. Overeating or constipation are other common causes of bloat. Some women experience bloat as a symptom of their monthly cycle.
Frequent urination- pregnancy causes an increase in blood volume in the body. The kidneys work overtime to filter the extra blood, causing pregnant women to pee more often. Conditions like a urinary tract infection can also cause frequent urination.
Fatigue- an overwhelming feeling of tiredness can be a pregnancy symptom or just a signal that your body needs rest. Fatigue is common in illness as well.
Mood swings- rapid mood changes caused by shifting hormones in early pregnancy. Women can also experience mood swings during their regular cycle as well.

Testing

Since pregnancy symptoms can all be explained by another cause, they should not be used to predict pregnancy. If you think you might be pregnant, you should obtain a medical-grade pregnancy test, especially if you have pregnancy symptoms.

It is best to test for pregnancy the week after your missed period.
