Pregnancy does not only happen from sex on the exact day you ovulate.
An egg is available for fertilization for only a short time, but sperm can survive for several days. That means sex before ovulation can still result in pregnancy once the egg is released.
If you are looking back at your cycle because your period is late or an unplanned pregnancy is possible, schedule a free, confidential appointment with Birthright of Greater Hartford for a medical-grade pregnancy test.
The Fertile Window Is Several Days Long
Ovulation occurs when one of your ovaries releases an egg.
After ovulation, the egg can generally be fertilized for about 12 to 24 hours. Sperm can remain alive in the female reproductive tract for as long as about five days.
Together, those timelines create what is commonly called the fertile window.
For example, sex on a Saturday could result in pregnancy even if you do not ovulate until Monday or Tuesday, because sperm may still be present when the egg is released.
The Highest-Chance Days Are Close to Ovulation
Your likelihood of conception generally rises during the several days before ovulation and around ovulation itself.
The problem is that ovulation does not happen on the same cycle day for every woman, or even every month.
Day 14 is often used as an example because it aligns with a typical 28-day menstrual cycle, though cycles can be shorter or longer. Ovulation can also shift from month to month.
That is why simply counting a certain number of days after your period is not a precise way to identify when pregnancy could occur.
How Can You Tell Ovulation Is Approaching?
Your body may provide some clues.
Cervical mucus often becomes clearer, wetter, and more slippery near ovulation. Ovulation predictor kits can detect the rise in luteinizing hormone that usually happens shortly before an egg is released.
Basal body temperature tracking works a little differently. Your temperature typically rises slightly after ovulation, so charting it over several cycles may help you recognize a pattern.
Apps can be useful for recording these changes, but their predicted fertile days are still estimates.
If You’re Waiting to Find Out
Once sex has already occurred, tracking your fertile window cannot tell you whether conception happened. A pregnancy test looks instead for human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), the hormone produced during pregnancy.
Clinical urine pregnancy tests can detect relatively low levels of hCG and are highly accurate. For example, the pregnancy tests used by Birthright of Greater Hartford have an accuracy rate of greater than 99%. This means you can feel confident about the result you’re receiving.
