What is Adoption Like?

You may have your reservations about adoption, or you may not fully understand the process. The process of adoption has greatly improved over the years, allowing birth mothers to have more of a say in the process.

Adoption is the legal process that allows a family to take responsibility for another’s child. The three types of adoption plans to choose from include:

Open adoption: This adoption type allows you, as the birth mother, to be in regular contact with your child. You will be able to directly communicate with the adoptive family and build a relationship with your child. This could include visitation, emails, phone or video calls, and other forms of communication.
Closed adoption: This type of adoption does not allow communication between you and the adoptive family. Contact information will not be shared.
Semi-open adoption: All communication is done through a third party—an adoption agency or an attorney. Contact information is not shared between you and the adoptive parents. The adoptive family can send you updates about the child through a third party.
