Pregnancy in College: How Can it Work?

Pregnancy during college or grad school is more common than many realize. However, the good news is that many women have successfully made it work by adjusting their timelines, modifying their class schedules, or taking advantage of more flexible arrangements, thanks to Title IX.

However, if you are at the beginning of your college career, it can be a little more challenging, but it’s still possible. There are maternity homes and other resources available to support women in achieving their educational goals.

Your Rights and Campus Accommodations

As a college student, you are protected under Title IX, a federal law that ensures your right to continue your education while pregnant. Your school must allow you to remain enrolled, make up any missed work, and provide reasonable accommodations, such as flexible deadlines and excused medical absences.

Many Connecticut campuses also offer student-parent support programs, lactation rooms, and family resource services that can make balancing school and pregnancy easier.

You Have Three Options

When you’re pregnant and living on campus, you have three options:

  • Parenting: You can continue your studies while parenting with the right support system in place. Many schools offer programs or resources to help student-parents thrive. You may want to look into maternity homes or consider online education options.
  • Adoption: If parenting isn’t the right fit for you, adoption is another option to give your child a bright future. You would be able to continue school with some flexibility for appointments and medical leave for birth, but then return to school when you are physically and emotionally ready.
  • Abortion: This is a medical procedure that ends the life of your developing baby and involves potential physical and emotional risks. It’s essential to have accurate, factual information before making this decision.
